Message From the President:
As president of the Ark-La-Tex Caged Bird Club, I would like to thank you for stopping by our little corner of the web. I would also like to take this opportunity to share with you the vision the Ark-La-Tex Caged Bird Club has for this year. In years past, we have usually sponsored and organized a summer bird fair. Our mission for this year is a little different than in years past. Earlier this year, the active, attending members of the club voted unanimously not to hold the bird fair this year. We as a club realized that we have become pros at placing parrots in homes but have somehow missed the mark when it comes to teaching and educating humans about how to live successfully with parrots. Our mission statement proclaims that we are dedicated to "promoting the proper care of exotic birds." In an effort to fully realize our mission statement, we as a club are taking this year to educate and teach methods to successfully live with parrots in captivity. It is the intention of the Ark-La-Tex Caged Bird Club to positively impact the lives of the parrots that are in our charge. We realize that we can hold bird fair after bird fair but if we fail to positively impact the life of companion parrots, then we are indeed missing the mark. If you are interested in learning more about living successfully with parrots, you are always welcome at any of our monthly meetings.

Course Description
Training with positive reinforcement is a skill caregivers can learn to use to create and modify their parrot’s behavior. Paired with careful observation of bird body language it can be a powerful tool in shaping a well behaved, interactive and entertaining companion parrot. The mechanics of training with positive reinforcement will be explored via lecture, video, games, activities and live demonstrations. We will also explore the drawbacks of using methods based in negative reinforcement that have been traditionally used to create behaviors, as well as learn how to apply the more trust building alternatives. With video examples of parrots voluntarily participating in physical exams, intramuscular injections and blood draws without restraint, participants will be inspired by the power of positive reinforcement training.
