ACBC IN ACTION

The Ark-La-Tex Caged Bird Club was formed to promote the proper care of exotic birds. One of the many ways we achieve this goal is to support various aviculture organizations in our area as well as other organizations worldwide. Below are just a few of the organizations we have supported.

Since the passing of Alex, September 6, 2007, the Ark-La-Tex Caged Bird Club made a contribution to help further the study of the cognitive and communication research began by Dr. Irene Pepperberg over 30 years ago. Alex was an extraordinary parrot with an amazing ability to identify objects, colors, shapes, and foods just to name a few.

By visiting the website, you will find other ways that you can help support The Alex Foundation in addition to reading more about Alex, as well as Griffin and Wart the remaining African Greys that are participating in this research.

Alex was an acronym for Avian Learning EXperiment, hopefully, his legacy will continue to prosper..

Project "Nido Adoptivo:"

The Ark-La-Tex Caged Bird Club has become a "beni-factor" in conjunction with The Bird Endowment to purchase a nesting box placed in the Bolivia, the native habitat of the Blue Throated Macaw. Nesting sites are hard to come by and it is the hope of ACBC that we can help a wild pair of Blue Throated Macaws produce wild offspring in their native lands. For more info on project "Nido Adoptivo" click on the Bird Endowment logo above.

The Ark-La-Tex Caged Bird Club is named one of the Honorary Bird Curators of Elwood and Dicha, a pair of Blue Throated Macaws. Curator, Laney Rickman, has been a long time friend and supporter of The Ark-La Tex Caged Bird Club. In addition to her friendship to our club, Laney has done several presentations about her work with Blue Throated Macaws. We as a club whole heartedly support Laney's efforts with these rare and beautiful birds.

Ric Flowers, as president, accepts a Honorary Bird Curators Certificate on behalf of Ark-La-Tex Caged Bird Club. The Shreveport, LA., presentation by Laney Rickman was recognition for the important role the club played in the acquisition of Elwood.

The Caldwell Zoo located in Tyler, Texas is truly a wonderful experience. The Caldwell Zoo has been quite successful in creating large natural enclosures for each species of exotic animal they keep. The Macaws that are perched at the entrance are a sight to behold. Caldwell Zoo has been an annual outing for the club for many years. We have been fortunate to have had many "behind the scenes" tours that were led by the zoo's knowledgeable staff. This year we were able to give back to the Caldwell Zoo in appreciation for all the years of education and enjoyment they have provided us. If you would like more info on the Caldwell Zoo, please contact them at (903) 593-0121 or visit their web site by clicking on their logo above. Below are a few pictures that were highlights of our trip.

We have also chosen to support the Macaw Landing Foundation in memory of two members that have recently passed away: Rita Tindall and Vance Hoover.  Rita and Vance were dedicated Macaw keepers as well as founding members of the Ark-La-Tex Caged Bird Club.  Funds were donated to the M.L.F.'s "FLY FREE" program whereby donated Macaws are paired for breeding and the offspring are released into their natural habitat. We were able to ensure the release of two young Macaws in honor of Rita and Vance.   If you would like more info on the Macaw Landing Foundation, click on their logo above.   Contact Jack Devine, the curator and founder of the M.L.F.
